Shaolin Records Back In The Record Business

Founded in 1984 with the release of vinyl records and cassettes, Shaolin Records kept a low profile in

Utah during the 1990's. Shifting their focus from screenplay development and college radio to Kung Fu products better serviced the growing Tai Chi and Kung Fu schools of Shaolin Chi Mantis, also founded by Richard O'Connor.

During the 1990's Richard received his Chinese Buddhist name, Zhen Shen-Lang, "Spirit Wolf of Truth." Founding the nonprofit organization, Tai Chi Youth, Richard, now known mostly as "Master Zhen," recorded many songs for the Kung Fu school's live performances and class workouts.

Selling workout cassettes and demo team rehearsal tapes, Shaolin Records continued to produce and sell albums of music -- primarily to Utah students.

Shaolin Records remained a one-man operation throughout the nineties. Without a computer, without distribution, Richard at least spread copies of our records to relatives and friends across the country for holidays and birthdays.

In 1999 Richard got his first computer, an iMac Blueberry with 256 RAM. We were cooking.

Over a dozen websites were launched during 1999 and 2000. Created in Adobe PageMill 3.0, Richard developed his webmaster skills by studying the webmonkey.com tutorials and printing out ALL the HELP manuals.

Now, in 2006, we've got the very last of Macintosh computers ever made before using the INTEL CHIP in 2006. This iMac G5 20" with iSight camera and 1.5 GB of RAM is the last of the Macintosh computer chips. We probably would've gotten the INTEL CHIP model, but ProTools, our recording studio software, still wasn't ready for use on the INTEL CHIP iMacs when we bought this one from the Apple Store.

Our database system is a customized FileMaker accounting system from BIZ BASICS and SONGTRACKER PRO.

Armed with Dreamweaver 8, we want to upgrade many of our past pages to CSS and XHTML.

PayPal is now the primary online credit card ordering method of Shaolin Records and Shaolin Communications and shaolinCOM.com

Originally, shaolinCOM.com was the MARKETING WEBSITE and SHOPPING CART of all our websites and companies.

Then we became a domain name reseller and webhosting provider through GoDaddy.com

So, www.shaolinCOMMUNICATIONS.com became the homepage for ordering WEBHOSTING and buying a DOMAIN NAME.

From Our Garage

Shaolin Records is still a home based business. As orders continue to increase, we are appreciating the sales through other vendors. In December of 2005, Shaolin Communications unplugged it's "Shaolin Shopping Cart" of over 100 Kung Fu weapons and supplies. Kept in our Shaolin deep freezer, that's not plugged in, your CDs are kept a comfortable temperature year round in their insulated environment.

Richard O'Connor, President and Warehouseman of Shaolin Communications, says he's glad to be sellling more CDs and less spears. "I had to make a custom box for every spear or set of spears. That took me 15 minutes sometimes," explains Richard. "Then they complain about the shipping costs."

Since the 911 event, shipping rates have increased dramatically. This is especially evident when we ship oversize and weird size boxes.

The main reaso for the reduction in spear and long weapon orders is the removal of the SHAOLIN SHOPPING CART featured at www.shaolinCOM.com since 1999. In 2005, Shaolin Communications became a domain name reseller and webhosting provider for GoDaddy and moved all our websites to our own Shaolin Communications webservers.

"I think we're moving out of the martial arts weapon sales," says Richard O'Connor. "It is very expensive to inventory these weapons. They can be difficult to obtain since all our weapons are imported from China twice per year. And, oh yeah, the shipping costs."

Kung Fu Connection

Shaolin Kung Fu (Gongfu) was a serious hobby of Richard O'Connor in 1984 when he founded Shaolin Records. Using the name 'Shaolin' on his enterprises, inspired a higher level of altruism in Richard as he built his Utah businesses.

Shaolin Chi Mantis Traditional Buddhist Gongfu and Taijiquan, (that's the longwinded name of our school), reached its' peak in 1996 when Tai Chi Youth was formed. All students of Shaolin Chi Mantis were automatically transferred into Tai Chi Youth.

Only those requesting to join Shaolin Chi Mantis were allowed back into the SCM membership.

A special belt test was created to further discourage students from joining Shaolin Chi Mantis, the INITIATE BELT TEST of SCM.

Master Zhen wanted Shaolin Chi Mantis to be a traditional school, without any compromising for the inabilities and disinterests of the students.

Tai Chi Youth was a non-demoninational school, that included some Buddhism and Daoism, but did not require as much self-discipline and also lacked all of the traditional Chinese weaponry normally taught in a Kung Fu school.
